This is a song about the songwriter's 3 years at Nottingham University, studying for a Degree. 'The Fourteen' references the 14 bars on campus at the time. Here's Guy Phoenix:
I lived and studied at Nottingham University in England from 1986 to 1989. This song is about the freedom that a 19-year-old man experiences when first away from home and with none of the parental restrictions. The words allude to quite a few of the crazy things that happened during those years, mostly at student parties.
I really wanted to evoke the feeling of 'She Sells Sanctuary' by the Cult in this song – it was always the go-to song at every party I went to.
One of the many 'challenges' for students was to 'Do the Campus Fourteen'. There were 14 bars on the University Campus, the earliest opened at 6PM, last orders at the latest were 11PM. The challenge was to drink a pint of beer (or lager) in very bar in one evening. Quite the drinking challenge…! Hence the title 'Do the Fourteen'.
